The first colder nights of early fall bring with it cozy ideas of fair-isle knits and Scandinavian Ski sweaters to keep you toasty when the real cold gets here. But I am usually in ‘winter denial ‘until much later and then often around the darker times of the year, I am longing for the lazy, warm days of late summer with the buzzing of bees in the air. What to do? I was in no way ready to knit snowflakes! Sitting by the local creek one afternoon, soaking up some late summer sun, pondering this dilemma, I watched the dragonflies dart to and fro in the sparkling light, and the perfect idea came to me: A colorful double knit hat, with dragonflies to represent summer days, worked in jewel tones of dragonflies, sunshine and sparkling water-drops, colors which would make me happy and a hat that would keep me warm and remind me all winter long that longer days are right around the corner!
The name Odonata (Odonata is an order of insects, encompassing dragonflies and damselflies.) to me has a beautiful ring to it and makes me think ‘Ode to summer’ which is what this hat truly is!

Die ersten kalten Herbstnächte bringen Gedanken an skandinavische Skipullover und bunte ‘Fair-Isle’ Schneeflocken. Aber meist bin ich noch gar nicht in Winterstimmung und dann, in den kalten, dunklen Nächten, sehne ich mich nach den trägen, warmen Tagen des Spätsommers mit dem Summen der Bienen in der milden Luft.
Was nun? Schneeflockenmuster gehen mir im Herbst noch ganz gegen den Strich. Aber eine farbenfrohe Doppelstrick-Mütze mit Libellen als Motiv, dafür könnte ich mich schon mehr begeistern.
In bunten Farbtönen als Erinnerung an Sommertage, glänzende Wassertropfen und Spaziergänge am Bachufer. Eine Mütze, die warm hält und Farben, die mich den ganzen Winter lang glücklich machen und daran erinnern, dass die warme Zeit gerade nur noch ein paar Monate entfernt ist!
Odonata (Odonata ist eine Ordnung im Insektenreich, zu der Libellen und Wasserjungfern gehören) hat für mich einen schönen Klang, und ich denke immer ‘Ode an den Sommer’ und das passt ja eigentlich genau für diese Mütze!

Inspired by the Pre-Raphealite paintings of Jason and Medea and Medea’s story, I created a shawl and Tri’Coterie created a special colorway to fit the theme:
Red transitioning to mad black.

This fingering weight shawl is worked top down from the garter tab cast on to the lace edge. The beginning lace section shows the blossoming love, like rosy petals full of hope and faith in the future, reaching out and unfurling towards the sun. The lace border shows the unraveling, the dissolving of dreams. A simple stockinette section connects the two.

This hat is named for the hedgerow bounty we would bring home from our weekend excursions. My Mom would cook the berries into a delicious jam that could sparkle just as red as the raspberries beckoning between the green leaves, or be dark and jewel toned when there were more blackberries in the mix.

Designed to match the Hedgerow Jam cowl, it uses the same design elements but uses different techniques.

Worked in stranded color, the hat becomes nice and dense and is sure to keep your head toasty.

Needles: US size 7 (4 ½ mm) 24” (cm) circulars, or size to obtain gauge; US size 9 (5 ½ mm) for Berry Pattern and cast on

Gauge: 20 sts = 4” on US #7 (4 ½ mm) needles over stockinette; 20 sts = 4” on US #9 (5 ½ mm) needles over 2-color ribbing

Notions: 1 buttons (7/8” to 1” dia/ 2cm to 2.5cm dia)

Finished Sizes:
Women’s Medium (to fit a 21”/53 cm head)

This cowl is named for the hedgerow bounty we would bring home from our weekend excursions. My Mom would cook the berries into a delicious jam that could sparkle just as red as the raspberries beckoning between the green leaves, or be dark and jewel toned when there were more blackberries in the mix.

Worked entirely in Mosaic, and slipped stitch colorwork technique, you will ever only have to use one color at a time, making this the perfect and easy intro to working with two colors!

Wear this cowl open like a long scarf or wrap it twice for more warmth. With all the different ways to button it and wear it, it won’t get boring and will adapt to almost any temperature!
